Wednesday WIP

Hi all,

Hope your week is going well. Apologies for the lack of posts – 2017 is kicking my butt already *sighs* Still, it’s not all bad – have just started editing my witchy/vampire novella so I’ll share a wee snippet with you now. (Please bear in mind, just started editing so please forgive any mistakes!)

Venn stared at the little cottage with some trepidation. It cottagewas just so… cutesy. Warm red brick with a neat little garden, shadowed in the growing darkness, leaden-paned windows and a sloping roof. He wouldn’t be surprised to see deer and little bunnies frolicking through the grass. Urgh. This did not look like the home of a powerful witch. Maybe it was a kind of camouflage? Still it wasn’t as though he had a great deal of options here. Everyone else had turned him away. If this witch couldn’t help he was pretty much screwed.

He glided through the night to the painted front door. There was a neat, hand-printed sign.

For enquiries, come to back door.

Great. Like a servant, or a delivery person. Gritting his teeth he made his way round to the back and knocked sharply on the door. It flung open, spilling out warm light and framing the form of a small woman. He blinked at her a moment. Short, curvy, with brown, slightly frizzy hair pulled back in a messy up-do and thick glasses that gave her the look of a blinking owl. This – this was his last hope?

“Can I help you?”

Her voice was surprisingly rich and smooth. Fine, he was here now, though he wasn’t feeling optimistic.

“I hope so. You are the witch in residence here?”

Maybe she was an assistant or something? There could be someone inside who reeked of power. Her eyes narrowed as though she sensed his thoughts.

witch-fantasy_00408573“The one and only. I am Elizabeth Garrett Morrigan. And I need a good reason to want to help a vampire.”

He sighed. At least she had enough power to know what he was, that was surely a start.

“My name is Venn Draconius. I was told that you can be sympathetic to those who others shun. I am badly in need of help. I am under a curse.”

Her brow furrowed. “What kind of curse?”

“Could we perhaps discuss inside?”

A male voice came from inside the house. “Libby, don’t you dare invite a vampire in here.”

Venn raised an eyebrow. “I assure you no harm will come to anyone in this house on my account.” His lips twisted cynically. “I give you my word on that. Even if I had the inclination, the execution is no longer possible for me.”

The woman stared at him for a long moment, almost as if she was taking his measure. He was surprised to notice that her eyes behind those huge lenses were actually quite beautiful, a deep forest green with tiny flecks of gold around the iris. Odd, he hadn’t noticed a woman’s eyes in probably a century.

She suddenly stepped back, gesturing him in. “I invite you into my home.”

He gave her a brief bow, before stepping past her into a warm and homely kitchen. Curious, he glanced around for the source of the male voice. Perhaps she felt safe because she wasn’t alone.

“I honestly cannot believe you, Libby.” The voice sounded again, close, like it was in the room, but Venn couldn’t see any sign of anyone. “If we’re all killed in our sleep I swear I will never let you live it down.”

Libby gave a brief smile and gestured to an odd shape on the wall. “This is Huwie. Don’t mind him.”

“Don’t mind me? Don’t mind me! That’s gratitude for you.”

“Is that a starfish?”

Venn stared in bewilderment as one of the tiny creature’s arms flapped around, obviously in time with his distress.

She sniffed. “That is Huwie, he is my friend and my familiar and if you expect me to even consider helping you then you’ll be nice to him.”

Be nice to a talking starfish? Obviously this witch was crazier than he’d thought, but for now he needed to keep her on side.

“Erm, nice to meet you?”

Was he supposed to shake hands as well, and which of those waving arm/limb things were classed as hands? He felt the strangest urge to laugh. Again something that hadn’t ocurred to him in more years then he cared to remember.

“Take a seat,” the little witch gestured him to one of the wooden chairs at the table, “and tell me about this curse.”

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

Can you believe we’re into October this week? I have no idea where this year seems to have gone. It’s been a busy week, lots on with the day jobs and trying to get caught up on lots of writing bits and pieces. My wolves book is currently with my editor so hoping to get that back soon – no doubt covered in shiny red marks for me to go through. (I’ve already been told I have a comma splice problem – it’s true, I def need help lol!).

Still working on my current WIP but getting into the final section I think (of course, there’s still the big climatic ending so not done yet!) and thinking about joining in Nano this year to try and get a decent chunk done on the next in my series.

In the meantime though, we’ve been busy at home too. These two came to ‘join the family’ last weekend and so have been spending the week helping them settle in. The wee black one is Drizzt and the black and white one is Dresden. In typical me fashion, Drizzt has baby vampire teeth and Dresden has the bat symbol on his nose (Batcat!). Didn’t even notice until we got them home, but think they were definitely meant for me 🙂

Anyway, better go get my kitty cuddles in 😉 Take care x

Tuesday Catch Up

Hi all,

Well, first I guess I should apologise for the lack of posts lately. 2016-05-11-1462971004-479389-writerUnfortunately real-life has been kicking my ass. I won’t go into too many details, but just been feeling rather down and fed-up which makes it a bit harder to ‘switch on’ the creative side. Still, it happens sometimes and we get through it x

Anyway, onto more positives! Had a lovely weekend catching up with family and things are slowly picking up this week. Back on edits and should get the next book over to my editor in the next few days. Am just working on those last little tweaks – and of course, de-Britishing it lol! My heroine is suppose to American but since I’m obviously not, all sorts of British terms and phrases tend to automatically pour out when I’m just getting the story down – and then need to be ruthlessly cut out in edits! It’s a tricky process sometimes, and while I love you Americans then sometimes you don’t just have good substitutes for certain words and phrases 😉 I think for my next one I definitely need a British main character then I can happily go nuts with the UK words lol.

gray-wolfOnce I get this off for edits then should hopefully be able to get back to writing (well, and the other one I need to edit). I also have a cover almost finished, which I am loving – shall share soon and hopefully you’ll agree 🙂

Hope you all have a great week. Take care x

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

Ck0RTEAXEAAGQMi.jpgAm feeling a little sober this week, the events in Orlando are just heart-breaking – an attack not just on the US but on the LGBT community in particular. It’s so so sad that in this day and age, with all the advances we’ve made, that some people still feel so threatened by the fact that someone is different to them. How can we call ourselves a progressive society when people are still discriminated against, persecuted and even killed because of their sexuality, or race, or religion or anything else for that matter. The only good thing I see is the show of solidarity from around the world – the image of the Eiffel Tower, lit up in rainbow colours, was especially moving.

It seems a little odd to chat about my week in light of that, but it has been a busy one. Wolves_wolf_great_wallpapers_for_your_deskopAll booked and confirmed for the RNA Conference now, and have even had the chance to chat to some other first-timers which has made me a little less nervous. I also have an industry appointment booked so need to get my first chapter and synopsis sent off for that asap! I wasn’t actually planning on sending this book out until later in the year (after the second in my wolves series had been released) so am feeling a little rushed – but it’s a good opportunity so worth trying I think. Tbh the person I’m seeing is slightly off-genre for me, but I’m still thinking it was a valuable chance to get to chat to someone in the industry and maybe get some good feedback.

I’m also starting final edits on my wolves book this week – hoping to finalise a release date for next month – as well as reformat my zombie romance for re-release, as it reverted back to me when my old publisher closed down. So much to do, so little time!

Anyway, hope you have a good start to the week. Take care x

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

img_4693-600x441Start of a new week and a slightly late post since I seem to have been running round all day! Then get home and go online to see the sad news about David Bowie. There’s not a lot of people that you can say were absolute legends, but I think he definitely counts as one them. Someone who went his own way, had his own style and never let anyone change that about him. Will be sadly missed 🙁

So, apart from being a bit gutted by that today, it’s been another busy week. Am enjoying being back to the writing, and Niko and Katya’s story is definitely coming along 🙂 I do need to give myself a kick with the editing, but at least new work in being done and that makes me happy.

HPI’ve also treated myself to a wee break at the end of the month – going to Harry Potter Studios – squee! I’m so excited, am a huge fan and have been wanting to go since it opened but never quite managed it. Get to get my geek on to my heart’s content plus haven’t had a break in a while so should be nice 🙂

Anyway, I’m off to curl up and watch Labyrinth. Take care x

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

Well, our first Monday of 2016! It was back to the day job for me today, which let’s face it, is always a bit of a let down after Christmas, New Year and having a bit of a break. Still, those pesky bills don’t pay themselves 😉

wolves-loveOn on a better note though, it’s also been back to the writing. After hardly managing anything over December (unfortunately have been in too much pain to concentrate enough) it feels really good to be getting new words out. I’m currently back to my wolves – and I’ve definitely missed them! If you’ve read Scarlett Legacy then Niko is getting his own story next, and it’s great to be back seeing familar characters.

I also have lots of editing to do. Psychic Shadows will eventually get finished, and I think I’m probably going to try the slightly more ‘traditional’ publishing route for that one – so not only lots to do to get it polished up but also lots of new research to do. It’s going to be a busy year, but I’m looking forward to it!

Hope you’re all having a great start to the year. Take care x

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

Happy St Andrews Day!

happystandrewsFor those of you on the last day of Nano, good luck and happy writing. And for those who may have started Nano and are not going to make the ‘goal’ I’ll echo what I’ve been saying to a few friends on facebook today – if you’ve written this month, and especially if you’ve written more than you normally would have, then I’d consider it a win 🙂 I knew there was no way I was going to make 50k this month, but I have some new words down and I’ve got through a lot of writing-related tasks (some I must admit that have been hanging around for a while) so I’m quite happy with my productive November.

promo graphicFor a wee roundup – I organised and released a charity anthology, Duty Honor Desire, with all proceeds to Help for Heroes.

Prequel Cover 3I finally finished, edited, formatted and made a cover for my prequel, Love Awakened – that you can find free here:

https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/595957

I’ve also been busy with new writing, re-editing on a Christmas story, and of course, promo for Love Reawakened – which is on the last day of its Thanksgiving weekend sale price! You can find it here:

getBook.at/LoveReawakened

So, I’m feeling like it was a good month 🙂 We’re into December tomorrow so I guess it’s going to be a busy one, Christmassy things already seem to be stacking up so hopefully there will be time to fit in all the writing things as well!

Take care x

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

As you may have noticed, I am running late today. I have no excuse, it was simply a busy day yesterday and I ended up going to bed early and not planning my posts out like I normally go. It turned out just as well though since I got woken up at silly o-clock this morning by workmen drilling right outside my window. *sighs*

Cemetery in a foggy full moon nightSo, it’s been a busy week (does there seem to be any other kind lately?). As I’ve probably mentioned, my release has been put back to the 29th so I’ve been helping to fix the issues that held that up and doing a last ‘smoothing things out’ edit. I must admit I don’t find the editing part of the process a very enjoyable one. Things seem so obvious when someone else points them out to you – and I’m quite bad at having the same bad habits picked up every time. You’d think I’d learn *sighs* Still, that’s what we have editors for, and I’m lucky to have some very good ones who can pick up all these things for me 🙂

I’ve also been working on some promo graphics, which you will no doubt see soon. This part is actually a little more fun, I worked in photography for a while and still like to dabble and mess with the programmes so it’s a good way to keep my hand in.

Anyway, I should probably get back to it! Hope your Monday hasn’t been too bad, and hey the week gets better from here, right? 🙂

Take care x
