Fantastic Books and Where to Find Them

Hi all,

You know I can’t resist a HP reference 😉 I hope you’ve all had a good week and are all prepared for Sunday – eek, where has the time gone? As you may know I’ve had a lovely time this month working my way through my Xmassy to-read list. I absolutely love Christmas reads at this time of year and since I’m hoping you might do too, I thought I would share a few of my favourites and where you can find them. There’s paranormal, historical, sweet reads and steamy scenes – so something for everyone!

kissesMistletoe Kisses: A Westmore Christmas – Erzabet Bishop – 4 stars

Amazon link

This was a really fun paranormal romance. Gargoyles aren’t something you see very often in these type of stories but the author has built a very rich and varied paranormal world, with shifters, demons and even a pink dragon all mentioned. This is obviously part of a series and it probably would have benefitted me to read earlier ones first as some of the background details were a little brief and I feel some of the secondary characters probably had their own stories already. That said, the main story was followable and I liked the characters a lot.

Jess is a very strong character. She’s gone through some terrible things and although she’s still traumatised in many ways, she hasn’t let it break her. She’s constantly trying to give back and help others, but I liked that she also had a sassy and sarcastic side (woman after my own heart lol).

Thorne was initially very reluctant to be stuck babysitting what he thought would be a spoilt princess but the relationship between them quickly develops. While I liked Thorne as a character, the relationship progression from his own point of view did feel a little jumpy at parts. He seemed to go from ‘he wanted her but needed to move on and he was no good for her anyway’ to ‘refuses to leave her’ pretty abruptly and I would have liked to see a little more of his internal journey there – especially with the back story that was only really hinted at.

This story could have easily been expanded for me. I would have loved to have seen their relationship progression in more detail and there were quite a few unanswered questions still left at the end (though perhaps they get resolved in a later installment). Overall though I really enjoyed the story, great characters and chemistry and a sweet Christmas backdrop. Will definitely be checking out others in this series.

angelThe Wrong Kind of Angel – Ruby Moone – 4 stars

Amazon link

Charles is resigned to a lonely Christmas alone, when a stranger collapses on his door in the middle of a snowstorm. The beautiful young might share his sexual tastes but despite what he says, Charles knows he’s no angel. Harry has secrets of his own, that mean he can’t stay with Charles, no matter how tempted he may be, and ones that could very well get them both killed.

I really liked both characters in this. Charles initially comes across as very shy, quiet, even a little meek, but it quickly becomes apparent that he has hidden depths and is very capable of taking care of himself – and those around him. Harry has had a rough life and has had to do things he isn’t proud of to survive, but you can see that he has kept a core decency in the way he’s tried to save Julian. It was nice to see how they balanced each other out and the relationship development was really sweet.

Steamy scenes, gripping actions and a Christmas backdrop – what more could you ask for?

secretSecret Santa – Lichelle Slater – 4 stars

Amazon link

Bell is a Secret Santa elf, tasked with helping people to rediscover their Christmas spirit. Unfortunately she’s failed with bar owner Drake the past years, but she’s determined this year she will find exactly what he needs for Christmas. Turns out it might just be her 🙂

This was an adorable little Christmas story. Bell is a really sweet character who genuinely cares about the people in her small town and goes out of her way to try and find what they need and to make their lives that little bit better. There was a great cast of secondary characters and a real community feel to the story. Drake wasn’t quite as well-developed for me – it might have been nice to see a bit from his point of view to help with that – but it was nice to see his progression from grumpy Scrooge to someone who was opening up to the festive season.

I did like their relationship development. The angst with Kristi did come across a little over-the-top at times and some of Bell’s assumptions didn’t really make sense to me – but the fact that she was a little naive in some ways didn’t make it seem as unbelievable as it otherwise might have been. Overall a really sweet Christmassy read. Would look for others from this author.

familyA Family for Christmas – Jay Northcote – 5 stars

Amazon link

This was a great read, just overflowing with Christmassyness (it’s a word!). Rudy has a crush on his co-worker Zac but is convinced it’s all one-sided. When he learns Zac is spending Christmas all alone though, he can’t resist asking him along to his own crazy family festivities. When his family all assume that he’s finally found a boyfriend he doesn’t have the heart to upset them at Christmas – and Zac agrees to go along with the pretence. Soon though it’s feeling a little more real than either of them expected.

I really liked the characters in this story. Rudy was sweet and shy, with an endearing habit of always putting his foot in it. Zac has obviously had a hard life and a tough outer shell to show for it. It was really lovely to see that breaking down though under the onslaught of Rudy and his whole family, and to see that there was a softer interior that was desperate for something more out of life. The relationship between them both was believable and I enjoyed the progression.

This was just brimming with lovely Christmas details, and I especially loved Rudy’s family with all their warmth, openness and occasional complete inappropriateness 🙂 Not a lot of angst along the way but a feel-good romance, perfect for the festive season.

migglesMerry Christmas Mr Miggles – Eli Easton – 5 stars

Amazon link

I just adored this book. Sweet, feel-good romance with just the right amount of Christmas spirit.

Toby is the junior librarian and loves his job. At the start of the story he has a horrible boyfriend and an ever-growing curiousity about his boss, the head librarian Mr Miggles. The older man is quiet, reserved, keeps himself to himself and Toby feels there’s always a sadness about him.

When Mr Miggles is wrongly arrested not only Toby but the whole town comes to realise just how much they miss him, and how much he quietly does behind the scenes for everyone.

This was a lovely story, there was a real small town community feel to it, with lots of interesting secondary characters. I loved the slow burn on the romance side, and the relationship development was sweet and believable. Both were well-developed characters; it was nice to see Toby growing and finding the strength to stand up for both himself and people he cared about, while Sean had to learn to loosen up a bit and let people in again. They were a great couple who really complemented each other well.

Overall, really enjoyable festive read. Will definitely be looking for more from this author.

And if you’re still looking for something I may have an angel themed Christmassy romance out myself 😉

angel-cover-7Divine Justice

He was sent to judge her… not fall for her.

As a justice angel, Jeremiah had been dispensing heavenly judgement for millenia. While he used to love his job, take pride it, then centuries of watching humans turn to selfishness and greed had left him cynical and bitter. These were no fit emotions for an angel and when he is summoned before the Archangel Council he is willing to accept his fate. Instead he is given one final task, one last judgement.

Holly was used to being alone. It didn’t mean she didn’t love her life, her friends, her work at the shelter. For Christmas though, she just wanted one thing; hope. Hospital tests were never fun and Holly had spent enough time being poked and prodded to never want to go through it again. When she encounters the mysterious Jeremiah she knows there’s something different about him. Something that has her inviting him in out of the cold and into her home, where the fire isn’t the only thing keeping them warm.

As secrets pile up faster than the snow outside, and lives hang in the balance, can Holly and Jeremiah both manage to get what they really want this Christmas?

Saturday Teaser

Hi all,

Weekend at last – and can you believe it’s out last one before Christmas? Hope you’ll all feeling organised and Christmassy 🙂 I think I’m getting there, waiting on some last bits coming through the post, so fingers crossed nothing’s too late! To keep in the Christmassy spirit, I’m sharing an excerpt from my angel romance, Divine Justice – hope you enjoy.

Jeremiah set his teeth as they had to return to the metal box. Why could humans not find a d632891b93e42d44292c7b22f223f958more suitable means of transport? Still, he’d managed to find an excuse to stay close to Holly, for now at least. So far she was perfect, from her petal soft skin to her delicate features, from her kindness to the banked passion he saw behind her eyes. The way she always seemed to care about everyone, even when she had no logical reason to. There had to be something wrong with her, he just wasn’t looking hard enough.

He breathed a sigh of relief when she pulled into the same parking lot where they had met last night. If he had to spend much more time in this death contraption then he might just end up telling the council they could do whatever they wanted to him, it would surely be preferable. Instead, he forced himself to follow Holly’s lead and get out, breathing in thankful gasps of the frosty air. She gave him a brief smile before heading towards the nondescript building that he knew housed the soup kitchen. He strode after her, mentally going over what he knew about it. It was run totally on donations, a woman called Mary being in charge. Holly volunteered here all year round, one of the very few who did, and it looked like the centre was in trouble money-wise.

Background details but nothing that really helped him at the moment. He followed the slight woman in front of him as she pushed open the heavy door and into the rush of warm air and scent of cooking food.

“Holly,” a robust elderly woman came dashing over to her. “I’m so glad you could make it. Peter isn’t coming in and we’re short again.”

angel-cover-7Holly embraced the shorter woman and then stood back and gestured towards Jeremiah. “Mary, this is Jeremiah. He’s offered to help us out a bit today.”

Mary’s face broke into smiles as she warmly shook his hand. “That’s wonderful. It’s so nice to meet you, Jeremiah. You’re a lifesaver today.”

He took her hand, a little uncomfortable with the praise. “Don’t worry about it. Holly was kind enough to help me out, so the least I can do is give something back.”

Mary shot a searching glance at the other woman, and Holly flushed slightly and looked away. Was she embarrassed to be associated with him? Fair enough, he was acting the part of a homeless bum but somehow he hadn’t thought she seemed the type that would matter to. A stab of disappointment pricked him. Stupid, you wanted a sign she wasn’t as perfect as she seems. He pushed the thoughts aside, this was just a job anyway. Nothing more. He flashed Mary a smile.

“So, what do you want me to do?”

My Sexy Saturday – Christmas Romance

Hi all,

Hope you all have a fun weekend planned. I’ve off to a wee job this morning then am hoping to be able to chill out a bit and catch up on my editing – we’ll see how that goes! First though, I’m thrilled to be joining in the My Sexy Saturday blog hop. The theme this week is supposed to be Sexy in Space – sadly I have no space themed stories for you, so I hope you’ll settle for something heavenly instead (hey, it’s all up, right?) This is from my new Christmassy release, Divine Justice.

Studio shot of handsome man posing as fallen angel, on gray background

“Jeremiah, you have been brought before the Council of Archangels to answer for your recent actions.”

The words echoed around the coliseum. Pillars framed the circle, solid cloud of pure white veined faintly with pink and gold. Above them the sky glowed, reflecting the light of the heavens. There was a time when he would have appreciated the grandeur, the beauty of it. When he would never have expected to be in this position.

Jeremiah stood straight and tall in front of them. He was not going to beg for mercy or plead for his life. He was aware that he had… slipped. Where he had once loved his work, lived for it, been willing to believe in anyone or anything. Then centuries of watching the selfishness and greed of humans had left him bitter, cynical even. These were no kind of emotions for an angel. The council would be well within their rights to end his existence, a part of him would almost welcome it. The emptiness and peace of eternal oblivion. There was an appeal to that.

He eyed up the solemn line of archangels. All tall, blond, well-built. Ethereally beautiful, pure yet stern. He knew them all, had been friends with some of them once. It seemed a long time ago. When you lived forever then time started to lose all meaning.

Their leader stepped forward. Raphael looked solemn but then he generally did. Never one for cracking a smile, even in the old days.

“We have discussed the matter and reached a decision.”

Jeremiah held his breath. This was it. They were going to pronounce sentence, end him. There was little mercy for one of his kind; there couldn’t be with the powers they possessed. Up until this moment he’d thought he’d made his peace with that, but the faint tremble to his hands and the tightness in his chest proved him wrong. It was odd to be on the receiving end of judgement instead of being the one passing it. For the first time he wondered about those he had judged over his long existence – had they all felt like this?

Tuesday Catch Up

Hi all,

Hope you’re all having a fab week. It’s less than 3 weeks to Christmas – eek! I have been so christmas_tree_by_julie1226busy with Christmassy writing tasks that I’ve done nothing for real-life Christmas. I think ass-in-gear is required this week 🙂 I hope you’re all much more organised than I am!

It’s been a good, if ridiculously busy week! My shiny Kindle Fire from Black Friday came, and early as well, so am a happy bunny. My Christmas treat to myself. I managed to squeeze in my first Christmassy reads – it’s officially December so I’m allowed to start my huge list of Christmassy ‘to-read’ books – yay! It was also a good weekend – went to see Placebo on Friday night. 20th anniversary tour with all the classics – took me right back to my teenage years lol.

Apart from that have been working hard on Christmas stories. It may have slightly slipped my mind that I’d promised to send in a Christmassy short story to an Advent Calendar type event, so ended up rather dashing something out at the last min. I think it’s quite a fun wee story though – so hopefully will get to share with you soon. Divine Justice is finally finished (*sighs* I only rewrote the ending about a dozen times!) so final checks and go-over tonight and then can format and get onto Amazon for Thursday. I’m really excited to see what you all think – there’s nothing quite like a release day 🙂

Cover Reveal and Teaser – Divine Justice

Hi all,

Hope you’re all having a lovely weekend. Mine has been busy, busy getting m Christmas story all ready to go. I now have a title – Divine Justice – and a shiny new cover. I really hope you like it! It releases this Thursday – and here’s a wee teaser in the meantime! My girl, Holly does love her caffeine fix 😉

angel-cover-7

Holly bit her lip. “I just don’t want you to be… struggling, because of me. I don’t expect you to get me anything, you know? Just because I’m letting you stay here a few days I honestly don’t want anything in return.”

“I know that.” He laughed suddenly. “Are you always this difficult to give a gift to.”

Her cheeks burned. Probably yes. She remember something her mother had told her a long time ago. Shut up and just say thank you.

“Thank you,” she said softly. “I love it.”

“You’re welcome.”

A grin lit up her face. “I guess I better try it out, right? Sooooo many kinds of coffee!”

He laughed again. “I had no idea there were so many in the world.”

“You’ll tell me which one you like?”

“I don’t drink coffee.”

Holly gaped at him. Wow, she’d heard rumours there were people like that but… “I knew there had to be something wrong with you!”

***

Jeremiah smiled at her. She was pretty adorable when she got excited, even if it was over the strange human drink they all seemed obsessed with.

“I’m sorry to disappoint.” He told her seriously. “It is a bitter draught and I have never acquired the taste for it.”

Give him a nice cup of ambrosia any day but that wasn’t something he could tell the little human. She grinned at him and he saw the light of challenge spark in her eyes.

“I think you just haven’t found the right combination yet. Trust me, I’ll find it.”

He grinned at her. It was strange that she made him smile. So few things did lately. He hadn’t laughed with another person in years, maybe decades. Possibly even centuries if he thought too hard about it. Which maybe wasn’t a good idea. She made him want to smile though. Her genuine delight in the smallest of things, her concern for other people, her unwillingness to accept anything from anyone. She was easy to… like.

He shook his head and walked back into the living room. He was just here to judge, and for that he needed to remain impartial. Why was it getting harder and harder to keep telling himself that as Holly pottered round the kitchen, made him try a latte, a cappuccino and some strange bitter froth. It was almost worth the assault on his taste buds just to see her reactions. Her wide-eyed enthusiasm and her over-the-top faked disappointment when he didn’t like them.

“Next try!” She told him with a teasing smile.

Sunday Teaser – Christmas Angel Romance

Hi all,

Hope you’re all having a lovely weekend – and if you’re out shopping then you’ve managed to bag some bargins! I may have given in and treated myself to an Amazon Fire – at that prize it’s almost silly not to, right? 😉 Had a lovely meander round the Christmas markets as well so feeling nice and relaxed and all-set to get work to work lol! Speaking of Christmassy, I’m sharing a wee excerpt from my nw Christmas story, which will be out very soon. I’m still finishing off and editing though, so please excuse any mistakes! Hope you enjoy 🙂

Jeremiah glared at the glass contraption. Why did these humans insist on having strange mechanical things to do everything for them. No wonder they were slipping into darkness. How were people supposed to concentrate on what was important in life when everything they had and did was designed to save time and cut corners. Still, Holly had wanted coffee, she had in fact seemed extremely set on the idea and he knew this was the weird machine that apparently made it.

d632891b93e42d44292c7b22f223f958There were a lot of buttons though. He pressed one, then another, then three at once. Not a damn thing. Seriously? Why was it he had seen the conception of the universe, he knew truths that would make the human mind implode with their complexity, yet he couldn’t work some stupid bit of metal and glass. He glanced quickly around for Holly, no sign of her. Okay, then, just a little, tiny, cheat.

He forced power into the machine. It instantly started to buzz and hum, the water bubbling frantically inside. Too much? How could it be – coffee was hot water with beans in it. Hot was a necessary function. He pushed a bit more and a sharp crack echoed through the kitchen. Okay, maybe that didn’t sound good.

The crack rapidly expanded all the way down the glass container part and water began creeping out, bringing streams of steam with it. Bah. He waved a hand again and the water disappeared. Fine. Why was he doing this the hard way. Glaring he put a cup on the worktop, waved a hand over it and it filled with a dark liquid. Stupid machines for everything. What was wrong with doing things by hand?

“Is that a huge crack in my coffee machine?”

He jumped at Holly’s soft voice behind him, spinning round guiltily.

“Er, yeah. I just switched it on and it broke. Sorry. I’ll get you a new one. I got your coffee here though.”

He handed the mug over. She gave him a small smile. “Don’t be silly, it was old anyway – though that’s really a huge crack. You didn’t burn yourself did you?”

Her voice was laced with concern and he simply shook his head. A low laugh escaped her.

“It’s probably cracking in sympathy for my poor head.” She wrapped her hands around the mug and took a small sip. Her face crinkled. “And it took the last of the good coffee with it. Could you pass me the cream out of the fridge?”

christmas_tree_by_jacqchristiaan-d5o6lblHe automatically did so, his mind whirring. He did bad coffee? He was good at everything he tried. Everything.

“Erm, are you sure it’s that bad. Maybe you’re just still feeling off.”

She added a large pour of the cream and then gingerly sipped again. “Nope, it’s definitely only one step from bilge-water.” She suddenly paused, those huge eyes fixing on him. “I’m sorry, that was very ungrateful of me. I appreciate you making it, just the damn machine I guess.”

Jeremiah managed to nod. Bilge-water indeed! He would master this coffee trick just like he mastered everything else he ever came across.

Thursday Teaser – Paranormal Romance Angels

Hi all,

Hope you’re having a good week – and a very Happy Thanksgiving to all my US readers – piccies of yummy food have been flooding my social media all day so I’m already feeling a wee bit jealous sat here at work 😉 Since we don’t have Thanksgiving here I hope you’ll forgive me for skipping ahead to Christmas – and today I’m sharing a teaser from my upcoming Christmassy story. It hasn’t been fully edited yet – so do excuse any mistakes. I should have a cover and release date for you next week – but for now, I really hope you enjoy!

“Jeremiah, you have been summoned before the Council of Archangels to answer for your recent actions.”

angelJeremiah stood straight and tall in front of them. He was not going to beg for mercy or plead for his life. He was aware that he had… slipped. Where he had once loved his work, lived for it, been willing to believe in anyone or anything, then centuries of watching the selfishness and greed of humans had left him bitter, cynical even. “We have discussed the matter and reached a decision.”

Jeremiah held his breath. This was it. They were going to pronounce sentence, end him. There was little mercy for one of his kind, there couldn’t be with the powers they possessed.

“We have assigned you a job. A task, the outcome of which will decide your ultimate fate.”

Jeremiah blinked at the taller angel in surprise. A task? After the way his recent tasks had gone this was the last thing he’d been expecting.

“Why would you give me another task?” He asked them in complete bewilderment.

“This task has come from above, we have it on the highest authority that it is meant for you and you alone.”

Instant denial shot through him. He didn’t want the responsibility any more, he didn’t want any of it.

“I think there must be some mistake.”

Rafael smiled at him. “You know as well as the rest of us, there are no mistakes. This task is for you, and the council has agreed that we will suspend our judgement on your previous actions pending the outcome of it. The matter has been decided.”

Resignation sagged through him. Fine, let them give him some new task. It would only end up going the same way as the others. Then they would judge him and he could finally be done with it all.

“What is this task?”

Tuesday Catch Up

Hi all,

Well, I don’t know about where you are, but November has definitely hit here and it’s bleedin’ freezing! Even the Christmas lights have gone on this week so we must be into mid-winter *sighs* At least it looks twinkly! It’s been a bit of an up and down week. My sort of surrogate gran passed last week (used to be my gran-in-law but we’ve still stayed in touch) the funeral is tomorrow so will be a sad day.

2016-05-11-1462971004-479389-writerWriting-wise, it’s very much all-go. I’m thinking I may have to admit defeat on Nano – I’m currently just under 10k behind and with funeral tomorrow and family coming to visit at weekend it’s not looking very likely I’ll get back on target. (I’m still looking forward to them coming though – don’t worry Mum!). I’m not getting too stressed over it, I managed to get a standalone finished, some extra words on book 3 in my wolfie series and hopefully will get a Christmassy sort finished this week then can get it out in time lol. It’s angel-themed and I have some fab stock images to play with for a cover – can’t wait for you to see! I’ve also finally got back my first edits on book 2 in my wolves series. I think I’m probably going to have to push release back to January now – but hey, I have a Christmas book for you in the meantime 😉

Hope all the rest of you Nano-ers are doing better than me 🙂 Take care x

My Sexy Saturday – My Sexy Holidays

Hi all,

Weekend is finally here, hope you’ve all got a fun one lined up! I’m thrilled to be joining in the My Sexy Saturday blog hop. The theme this week is My Sexy Holidays – damn, I guess we’re going to have to admit they are creeping up fast! Still, one of the bright sides is lots of fun holiday stories – and I thought I’d share a wee snippet from my upcoming one. Hope you enjoy 🙂

christmas_tree_by_jacqchristiaan-d5o6lbl“I said, I’m really sorry but I can’t seem to figure out the shower. Could you possibly show me?”

“Erm, yeah, course, no worries.” God, she sounded like a mumbling idiot. Her brain seemed to have turned to mush.

She followed him back to the tiny bathroom and managed to talk him through the shower controls without gaping too much. Really, it wasn’t fair for one guy to be that damn hot. When she leaned across to switch on the dial, she ended up losing her balance, one hand going out to catch herself and landing up on the expanse of golden skin on his chest. He was warm, so warm, and the skin beneath her fingers felt satin smooth over the rock hard muscles. Holly felt herself freeze, her eyes shooting up to meet his, seeing the blue darken and heat.

“Sorry,” she squeaked, but she couldn’t seem to make her hand move.

His own hand reached out, running down her cheek before gently tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear. Holly held her breath, a trail of heat left in the wake of his touch. She wanted him to touch her more, to run her hands over all that golden skin, to follow that trail of hair down to…

He took a step back, her hand falling away, and Holly’s face burned. What the fuck was she thinking? There was no way he would want someone like her. Whirling on her heel she fled the suddenly claustrophobic bathroom, shutting the door behind her. Idiot!

d632891b93e42d44292c7b22f223f958Jeremiah cursed under his breath. What the hell? He had never been affected by a human before, yet his body was rock hard and he actually ached with the effort it had required not to reach out and drag her to him. To cover her lush lips, to shape every inch of those delectable curves, to bury himself deep inside her. Fuck, what was he thinking? His past transgressions were nothing compared to the trouble he would be in for sleeping with a human, especially one he’d been sent to judge. He turned on the water and fiddled with the temperature dial she’d shown him until it felt like there should be ice particles in the spray. Then he stood under it until he was chilled to the bone and his body finally decided to behave itself. Nothing was going to happen with Holly.

He frowned, there was a catch somewhere, he just had to find it. These days no humans were kind and sweet for the sake of it, there was always an ulterior motive. He would find it, and then he would be done with her.

Resolved, he turned off the water, quickly dried himself off and headed to the large, soft, freshly-made bed she’d provided for him. Yup, there had to be a catch somewhere.
