Wednesday WIP

Hi all,

Hope your week is going well. Apologies for the lack of posts – 2017 is kicking my butt already *sighs* Still, it’s not all bad – have just started editing my witchy/vampire novella so I’ll share a wee snippet with you now. (Please bear in mind, just started editing so please forgive any mistakes!)

Venn stared at the little cottage with some trepidation. It cottagewas just so… cutesy. Warm red brick with a neat little garden, shadowed in the growing darkness, leaden-paned windows and a sloping roof. He wouldn’t be surprised to see deer and little bunnies frolicking through the grass. Urgh. This did not look like the home of a powerful witch. Maybe it was a kind of camouflage? Still it wasn’t as though he had a great deal of options here. Everyone else had turned him away. If this witch couldn’t help he was pretty much screwed.

He glided through the night to the painted front door. There was a neat, hand-printed sign.

For enquiries, come to back door.

Great. Like a servant, or a delivery person. Gritting his teeth he made his way round to the back and knocked sharply on the door. It flung open, spilling out warm light and framing the form of a small woman. He blinked at her a moment. Short, curvy, with brown, slightly frizzy hair pulled back in a messy up-do and thick glasses that gave her the look of a blinking owl. This – this was his last hope?

“Can I help you?”

Her voice was surprisingly rich and smooth. Fine, he was here now, though he wasn’t feeling optimistic.

“I hope so. You are the witch in residence here?”

Maybe she was an assistant or something? There could be someone inside who reeked of power. Her eyes narrowed as though she sensed his thoughts.

witch-fantasy_00408573“The one and only. I am Elizabeth Garrett Morrigan. And I need a good reason to want to help a vampire.”

He sighed. At least she had enough power to know what he was, that was surely a start.

“My name is Venn Draconius. I was told that you can be sympathetic to those who others shun. I am badly in need of help. I am under a curse.”

Her brow furrowed. “What kind of curse?”

“Could we perhaps discuss inside?”

A male voice came from inside the house. “Libby, don’t you dare invite a vampire in here.”

Venn raised an eyebrow. “I assure you no harm will come to anyone in this house on my account.” His lips twisted cynically. “I give you my word on that. Even if I had the inclination, the execution is no longer possible for me.”

The woman stared at him for a long moment, almost as if she was taking his measure. He was surprised to notice that her eyes behind those huge lenses were actually quite beautiful, a deep forest green with tiny flecks of gold around the iris. Odd, he hadn’t noticed a woman’s eyes in probably a century.

She suddenly stepped back, gesturing him in. “I invite you into my home.”

He gave her a brief bow, before stepping past her into a warm and homely kitchen. Curious, he glanced around for the source of the male voice. Perhaps she felt safe because she wasn’t alone.

“I honestly cannot believe you, Libby.” The voice sounded again, close, like it was in the room, but Venn couldn’t see any sign of anyone. “If we’re all killed in our sleep I swear I will never let you live it down.”

Libby gave a brief smile and gestured to an odd shape on the wall. “This is Huwie. Don’t mind him.”

“Don’t mind me? Don’t mind me! That’s gratitude for you.”

“Is that a starfish?”

Venn stared in bewilderment as one of the tiny creature’s arms flapped around, obviously in time with his distress.

She sniffed. “That is Huwie, he is my friend and my familiar and if you expect me to even consider helping you then you’ll be nice to him.”

Be nice to a talking starfish? Obviously this witch was crazier than he’d thought, but for now he needed to keep her on side.

“Erm, nice to meet you?”

Was he supposed to shake hands as well, and which of those waving arm/limb things were classed as hands? He felt the strangest urge to laugh. Again something that hadn’t ocurred to him in more years then he cared to remember.

“Take a seat,” the little witch gestured him to one of the wooden chairs at the table, “and tell me about this curse.”

Monday Catch Up – Happy New Year

Hi all,

Happy New Year! Can you believe we’re into 2017? Like I think most people, I was pretty glad happy_new_year_2013_by_ladyowl-d5pwe9cto see the back of 2016 so let’s hope this will be a better year πŸ™‚ What I am grateful for though is the support of my wonderful readers through the year – and I hope you stick around as there’s lots planned for this year!

I’ve just sent my next round edits back for my second wolf book – so hopefully they will be back soon for finals and I can get a release date set. At the moment I’m thinking end of Jan/start of Feb. This one seems to have been getting put back forever, so I’m thrilled to finally see the end in sight.

I also have my novella to get edited – my allergic witch and cursed vampire have been so much fun to write and I can’t wait for you to meet them πŸ™‚

I’m working this week on a release schedule for the year – so won’t give away too much just yet. But let’s just say it will be a busy one and I can’t wait to get going with it.

I hope you’ve all had a lovely Christmas and New Year – and wish you everything you wish for in the year to come x

Thursday Teaser – Paranormal Romance

Hi all,

Hope your week’s doing well. I may have been slightly distracted on my original Nano project into a Christmas story – but hey, it’s almost that time of year. Everyone loves Christmas stories right? *shifty look* Anyway, I’m enjoying it and it won’t be too long so hopefully can get it finished off soon and then out in time πŸ™‚

In the meantime thoufh, I’m sharing a teaser from my next wolves book, which I promise will be out soon! I know I seem to have been saying that for a while but edits have taken longer than I thought they would and I don’t want it going out until it’s right. In the meantime though, hope you enjoy this πŸ™‚

cottageQuickening her pace, she headed down the winding track towards the main village. The light was fading fast, casting deep and slightly creepy shadows, while every rustle in the trees on either side made her start. It’s just your imagination, just your imagination. Or was it? The rustling to her left was getting louder and steadier. Her heart started pounding as she broke into a half jog. The noises were closer though, effortlessly keeping up with her. Sweat broke out, trickling down her back and stinging her eyes. Oh God, what the hell had she been thinking heading out in the dark on her own?

Katya. The voice in her head was deep, familiar and edged in concern

Niko? Relief made her not only telepathically reach out towards him – something she’d never done before – but stop in her tracks. Thank God! He would find her and…

wolves-and-werewolves-fire-and-ice-the-wolf-pack-23828159-240-320A huge, furry shape sprang from the shadows, heading straight for her. She screamed in terror as it knocked her down. There was a glimpse of bared teeth, hot breath on her face. Frantically she began scrabbling backwards, another shriek escaping her when a firm hand gripped her arm, dragging her to her feet. A human hand. For an instant she thought Niko had somehow magically found her, but this man was taller, thinner, with shaggy light brown hair. He was human though.

β€œPlease,” she gasped, β€œyou have to help me.”

He smiled at her and his eyes glowed in the faint moonlight. Fuck, not so human. She tried to run but the hand tightened on her arm, she was dragged back against him, a strong-smelling cloth pressed against her face. Her struggles slowed and darkness crept in.

Tuesday Catch Up

Hi all,

A shiny new week and a shiny new website! It’s still rather a work-in-progress so please excuse any teething blips and more content is being added so if there’s a random blank page it’s probably in the process of being filled πŸ™‚ It has definitely been a bit of a tasking job (complete with total mess-up at weekend where I broke the whole site and had to have a rather amazing friend baby-step me through fixing it lol!) Hopefully, I’m slightly starting to get the hang of the new set-up though – comments always welcome!

img_5259Apart from that though, it’s been the usual business here. Drizzt and Dresden are starting to settle in nicely – first vet visit yesterday so they are all checked over and jabbed up. It’s great to see the difference in Drez in particular, who’s gone from hiding behind the sofa for most of the first week to insisting I drop everything so he can sprawl over my lap for cuddles. Possibly not the best thing in terms of productivity, but you try saying no to that little face πŸ™‚

witch-fantasy_00408573Despite cat distractions though, work is happening. My standalone witchy/vampire novella is almost finished and I’m having a lot of fun writing it. It’s a little lighter than my usual style so it’s nice to have that bit of humour in it and I really hope you’ll enjoy reading it as much. My wolfie book is still with my editor but progress is being made and fingers crossed shall get it back soon and then can update with a release date (exciting!). I’m also putting the finishing touches to the cover and am really happy with it – so can’t wait to share πŸ™‚

Hope you’re all having a fab start to the week. Take care x

Tuesday Catch Up

Hi all,

Well, first I guess I should apologise for the lack of posts lately. 2016-05-11-1462971004-479389-writerUnfortunately real-life has been kicking my ass. I won’t go into too many details, but just been feeling rather down and fed-up which makes it a bit harder to ‘switch on’ the creative side. Still, it happens sometimes and we get through it x

Anyway, onto more positives! Had a lovely weekend catching up with family and things are slowly picking up this week. Back on edits and should get the next book over to my editor in the next few days. Am just working on those last little tweaks – and of course, de-Britishing it lol! My heroine is suppose to American but since I’m obviously not, all sorts of British terms and phrases tend to automatically pour out when I’m just getting the story down – and then need to be ruthlessly cut out in edits! It’s a tricky process sometimes, and while I love you Americans then sometimes you don’t just have good substitutes for certain words and phrases πŸ˜‰ I think for my next one I definitely need a British main character then I can happily go nuts with the UK words lol.

gray-wolfOnce I get this off for edits then should hopefully be able to get back to writing (well, and the other one I need to edit). I also have a cover almost finished, which I am loving – shall share soon and hopefully you’ll agree πŸ™‚

Hope you all have a great week. Take care x

Tuesday Catch-Up

Hi all,

2016-05-11-1462971004-479389-writerHow’s your week going? Mine is hectic already – hence me being a day late with this post! I’ve decided to put a submission in for the Carina Press proposals call-out, so have been panic polishing and rewriting some chapters for that to get in by tomorrow. I’m also still working on my novella for a publisher submission call, and while it’s coming along the deadline is also looming rather close πŸ™‚ Not to mention edits whenever I get a free minute!

I’m hoping to get on track by weekend as I have friends visiting and am looking forward to seeing them. Then next weekend, flying visit back to England for a wedding. Lots of fun, but also slightly adding to the deadline panic πŸ˜‰

Wolves_wolf_great_wallpapers_for_your_deskopA big thank you to all who shared my free read at weekend – some great numbers so hope you grabbed your copy, and if you did that you actually like it now! I’m also working on my shiny new newsletter. It’s going to have lots of fun updates, free short reads, special offers, bonus content and basically anything else I can think of to throw in there! If you haven’t signed up already, the link is here:

Your email address is never shared with anyone else, and absolutely no spam! I hate it too, would never inflict that on you πŸ™‚

Have a good week. Take care x

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

Well, Monday rolls round again – though I must admit it’s rather nice to just have one day job to go to πŸ™‚ It’s been a busy week with lots of extra freelance jobs on (not to mention a new release out!), but think they’re all getting tidied up now so can get back to my edits!

indexJuly is looking like a very busy month writing-wise. I’m taking a wee break from my wolves series to write a story for a submission call and am having a lot of fun with it. It’s much lighter, which is quite a nice change after finishing up book 2 in my wolves, which was rather intense towards the end. So, I have that to finish, final edits on my next wolves book and finally started edits on a paranormal suspense story that has been knocking around for a while. I’m joining in the 100k challenge again which will hopefully help with a bit of motivation.

I’ve also got the RNA Conference this weekend – it’s snuck up fast! Not sure if I’m more nervous or excited right now, but everyone I’ve spoken to so far seems very nice and am sure it will be a great learning experience. If you’re heading along as well then do feel free to say hi πŸ™‚

Have a great week. Take care x

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

Well, Monday rolls around again and let’s hope it’s a better week. I would like to say I’m feeling better about the result on Friday, but as I watch our country descend into chaos it’s rather hard to find a positive side. Our economy is plunging, international companies are already starting the process of pulling out of the UK, here in Scotland we’re looking at a second independence referendum, Ireland is being fed talks of a ‘United Ireland’ again amid serious worries about the jeopardisation of the Good Friday Agreement, and we have no leadership willing or capable to start the complicated and lengthy new negotiations that will now be needed. So many Leave voters seem to be regreting their choice as the reality is now starting to become clear to them and the lies they were fed are already being backtracked on.

As someone living in a very diverse and international city the inward-facing view of a lot of the country is a sad thing. I work for an internationally trading company so am worried for my job. I sell books internationally so now need to check the changes to those conditions. Myself, my generation and all the ones to follow have lost the right to live, work and study in Europe. I have so many friends here who have come from Europe for those very reasons – their position is now in jeopardy and there will be no others able to follow them. The boost they brought to out local economy will be lost, the money they provided to our local universities will be lost. The very diversity that makes up our country is being stamped out on a wave of racism and fearmongering.

I’m now holding my hopes on either Scotland being able to negotiate to stay in the EU separately from the rest of the UK (Denmark has a similar set-up so it’s not without precedent) or Indy2 actually going through. It is not a huge hope but tbh it’s more than the rest of the country has.

Anyway, apologies for the mini-rant – though I know quite a few international friends have been asking me about it, so there you go :p Writing-wise, it’s not been a very productive weekend I must admit. Edits are still coming along though for my wolves book 2 and I’m preparing for the re-release of Love Reawakened so things have still been happening. It’s also the last week of my old job (perhaps under the circumstances I should be keeping it lol!) but at least that will give me some more free time and hopefully a bit less stress.

Hope you have a good week. Take care x

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

Well, Monday rolls round again. Has been a bit of a frazzling week – think I have a broken toe so have been hobbling round all week. Managed to rest it up over the weekend so fingers crossed it might be a bit better today. Also only have two weeks left doing the two jobs – which will be a relief and free me a lot more time up for the writing side.

witch 2Speaking of which, it’s been all go! I’ve started final edits for book 2 in my wolves series, which even has a tentative title of Scarlett Seduction. (As you may know titles are hard for me, I tend to agonise over them constantly). The feedback so far from my wonderful beta readers has been very positive πŸ™‚ I’m also working on re-releasing Love Reawakened, my zombie story, which I think is going to have a new release date of the 30th June. I’ve got a shiny new cover for it as well, which I should be sharing later in the week – really hope you’ll like it!

I’m thinking next week’s blog posts might need to have something special in the lead-up – maybe a zombie themed week? Who doesn’t like a bit of spookiness in June, right? πŸ˜‰ More details to follow!

Hope you all have a great start to the week. Take care x

Tuesday Catch Up

Hi all,

So, we haven’t had a catch-up for a while – hope you’re all doing well πŸ™‚ It’s been busy busy over here. I have a new day job – as some of you know I’ve been looking for one for a while as the old one was getting me seriously stressed out! At the moment though I’m doing both jobs while the old one finds someone else – I know, I’m too nice to them lol! Hopefully that won’t be too long though and then can settle in the new one properly.

images1While the two jobs hasn’t left as much time for new writing, I have been managing to get on with the editing for book 2 in my wolves series. It’s gone out to my wonderful beta readers this week! This is always a stressful part for me. No matter how many books you do, the first time you put something out there for other people to read is always slightly scary – there’s always that little voice at the back of your head that says they’re all going to hate it! Fingers crossed that’s not going to be the case πŸ™‚

Anyway, I better get back to it. Take care x
