Weekend Writing Warriors – 16/03/2014

Hi all,

It’s Sunday again, and am joining in the Weekend Writing Warriors hop. I’ve been on the editing wagon this week. I must admit it’s never my favourite part of the process – I’m always slightly in awe of those writers who tell me how much they love going back and editing and rewriting their work afterwards. I much prefer the creative, let everything flow out, stage to the tweaking, tidying and endlessly reworking stage – I suppose it’s something about the way my mind works.

Still, it needs to be done – and thought I would share my excerpt from the book I’ve been editing this week. It’s provisionally titled Scarlett Legacy and is loosely inspired by the Little Red Riding Hood story. Hope you enjoy 🙂

red and wolf

Damian’s jaw clenched as he watched her ambling through the woods, seemingly lost in her own world and paying no attention to any possible dangers. He lifted his head, breathing in deeply to take in her scent on the drifting breeze. While he’d been expecting a reaction it still hit him like a sucker punch in his gut, his stomach clenched and his body hardened.

While his inner beast might be raging at him, he forced himself to stay hidden for now, easily keeping pace with her. She was exactly as he’d always imagined, tall and willowy, dark curls flowed down her back and framed delicate features, high cheekbones, lush red lips and huge dark eyes with thick lashes. Everything about her drew him in, but he’d waited too long to rush things now.

He watched as she paused, looking around her with confusion on her face. She turned in a slow circle, her brow furrowed. She was lost, he realised. Well, that was actually just perfect. His teeth bared in a wicked smile, he could go and ‘rescue’ her. She would think it was prince charming when actually it was the big bad wolf.

And don’t forget to check out the other great excerpts here

Happy Sunday x

  1. Hi Shelli, that’s a really tantalising excerpt. Anne Stenhouse

  2. Love your concept. Using old tales and fables and twisting them into a new story is something I have longed to do. My favourite tales are the those told by Disney and the spinoffs that follow.
I empathise with your editing chore, I too have just done a final edit for a book releasing soon. Good luck with yours.

    1. Thanks Becca. I love using inspiration from myths and old stories but this is the first time I’ve tried twisting and modernising such a well-known fairy tale so really hope it works! Good luck with your book too x

  3. Hi Shelli, your writing is incredibly fluid! Nice infusion of details without having any of it seemed contrived, or clunky! Good 8 🙂

    1. Thanks Teresa, that’s a lovely compliment – glad you enjoyed x

  4. Very tantalizing excerpt. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

  5. Little Red Riding hood from the (were)wolf’s POV?

  6. Very nicely done. I love getting his point of view and the tension it creates.

  7. Delicious! Loved it and want to keep reading – great excerpt. Best wishes with the editing chores…

  8. The description of her sounds perfect, and fits right into my idea of a Red Riding Hood. And that last sentence of your snippet. Oh wow, that one’s a doozy!

  9. It’s nice to see the point of view of the wolf. 🙂

  10. Fun excerpt. I admit I’m always a sucker for retellings, and I like that this one is told from the “wolf’s” perspective. 🙂

  11. This is really fun. I love the concept. I think the very last line is unnecessary though. You don’t need to tell me he’s the big bad wolf…I already gathered that. And, if I didn’t, wouldn’t you want to leave me hanging a bit more? (Just my humble little point of view)

    1. Thanks Millie -feedback always welcome! This excerpt is from the first chapter and is sort of introducing him, but I do take your point about leaving the reader hanging a bit longer 🙂
