Guest Author – Sheri Velarde with Not So Silent Night

Hi all,

Hope you’re having a fun and relaxing weekend 🙂 I’m still having to take it easy, but I’m thrilled to have Sheri Velarde guesting today to talk about why she writes the genre she does, and what kind of reactions she sometimes gets! Take it away Sheri 🙂

I’m predominately a paranormal romance author, though I do write other romances and sometimes just straight up speculative fiction. I have had a fascination with the paranormal since I was a kid. The book that started it all was Bunnicula, a story of a “vampire” rabbit that drains vegetables in the garden. Sounds funny but it made an impression. I still love vampires to this day, though I have of course learned to love shifters and other magical creatures, like the ones in Not So Silent Night.

Now as for the romance part, I think watching the Thorne Birds as a child with my grandma sent me down that path. From there I read the book and then started to read a lot of the Harlequin romances she had as well. Eventually my two loves came together when I discovered the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, romance and paranormal! Score!

Now as an author of paranormal romances I come across people who either love the genre like I do or have some pretty negative reactions. Many people have told me that this genre is “so passe”. Well I don’t think so and neither to my readers! A lot of people like to put down romance novels in genre, saying they are easy to write and follow a formula. To this I always reply, by asking how many books the person saying this has published and if they know that romance is the biggest selling genre in books for many years running. I also tell them that there is no tried and true formula and ask them to write a convincing love scene if they think it is so easy! People usually shut up by that point.

All I can say is that I am lucky enough to write what I love and call it a job. That is an awesome feeling! I can tell you that I will be writing paranormal romance for many years to come and am darn proud of that!

Hear hear! Sheri has a Christmas-themed new release out, Not So Silent Night. It’s been on my ‘recouping reading list’ this week, and it’s a great read, so trust me you’re in for a treat.
