Christmas Reading Recommends

Hi all,

Just a few days to go until Christmas! Are you all feeling festive? I’ve been enjoying getting through lots of Christmassy reads, some new and a couple re-reads from previous years – so I thought I would share reviews on a few of my personal favourites, in case you’re looking for a bit of inspiration 🙂

27256825The Perfect Gift (3 Wise Men) – Serenity Woods – 4 star

This was an enjoyable and sweet read about two people with troubled pasts who come together. Brock is just passing the two year anniversary of his wife’s death from cancer, he always swore that he would never love again, but single mum Erin makes him question that vow. Erin has always had terrible taste in men, ending with her son’s father who left them when she was pregnant, and has tried to focus on her son since, especially with him having life-threatening asthma attacks. While drawn to Brock, a doctor who has helped with her son’s treatment, she struggles with self-esteem in wondering what a billionaire doctor would see in her.

The struggles of both the characters were done well, and were relatable to. Brock’s guilt over moving on after his wife, and Erin’s struggle to accept being with someone rich after scrimping for every penny for years. It was nice to see them both working through those though and coming together. Could have maybe done with a little more conflict, but then I’m maybe a bit evil and like my characters to suffer a bit for their HEA lol!

I did really like the background of Brock in particular, he and his two brothers combine their very different skills to help sick children, calling themselved the ‘Three Wise Men’. The insight into the other two brothers was interesting and I’m assuming they will have their own stories to follow. I also liked a lot of the secondary characters, and Erin’s son was really cute, would have been nice to see more of him.

Overall, a fun and sweet story about people finding love when they had both given up on it. I will be looking out for more in the series.

23508066.jpgFrosty Relations – Tara Quan – 4 stars

Mina is a familar while Jack Frost (as you might guess by the name lol) is a frost mage/warlock. They’ve known each other since childhood, Mina has always been in love with him and was destined to be Jack’s familar, instead he rejected her and that life and now they both work in ‘normal’jobs. When they both sign up for a paranormal one-night stand service they end up matched with each other.

It’s hard to find something a bit different when reading PNR but this managed it. Mina and Jack were both quite different kinds of paranormal creatures to the usual and I liked the details on their powers and the way they complemented each other magically. Mina was a great character, strong and independent, not afraid to stand up to Jack and their banter was fun and amusing. Jack initially came off as a bit of a petulant child, used to having his own way in everything, but you saw more to him as the story went on and he became a much more likeable character. It was also fascinating to see him using his powers in the bedroom – it certainly made things interesting 😉

Overall, a really enjoyable and fun story. Will definitely look for more in this series.

51+azFaf41L._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_Blame it on the Fruitcake – Pat Henshaw – 4 stars

Sam is a working-class mechanic who has no family and was raised in a children’s home. When he arrives home to fruitcake on his doorstep and an invite to his new neighbours party he isn’t going to bother going – until he tastes the fruitcake! When he meets his new neighbour, Jay, he doesn’t understand why someone so hot, with a fancy job and a loving family would be interested in him.

This was a really fun and sweet read. Sam’s obsession with fruitcake was hilarious, as well as his despair with Jay’s meddling family. They were a lovely couple and you did slightly want to shake Sam sometimes for his insecurities, but it was nice to see him starting to work through them. I’m not always a fan of first person narrative but it did work well here, Sam’s internal voice was really funny and I loved some of his turns of phrases. It might have been nice to get a little more insight into Jay’s side of things, but that’s the trade-off I suppose.

Overall, this was a really sweet and funny romance that will def get you in the Christmas mood – and probably wanting fruitcake! Will def look for more from this author.

indexNot so Silent Night – Sheri Velarde – 4 stars

Anna is a witch and a Christmas cynic so is not looking forward to the holidays – all that changes when a gorgeous Russian bear shifter shows up at her flower shop. There’s instant sparks between them but they will have to deal with trouble from the local werewolf pack.

This was a hot and steamy romance, with a nice Christmas theme. I liked Anna as a character and her powers were fascinating, it also was interesting to see them growing as the story progressed. Alexander was a scrummy shifter hero, but it was nice to see a change from the over-the-top alpha personality that often seems to go with that. While he was protective of Anna, he was also sweet and believed in her own abilities. The sex scenes were well-written and definitely fan-inducing 😉

Overall, a fun paranormal read, with a good mix of sweet and sexy.

index2Heart of the Season – Julianna Douglas – 5 stars

This really did have it all in a Christmas story, gorgeous yet scarred military hero, sweet yet strong animal activist, adorable hero dog, and a few Christmas miracles 🙂

Zach would never have survived the bomb blast that scarred his body and took his leg if it wasn’t for Akilah, the dog he befriended in Afganistan. When he wakes up back in hospital in the US, it’s not his leg he misses the most, but his furry best friend. He’s been desperately trying to get her out of there, but with military regulations and the remote location of the base it’s been an impossible task. Enter Jeannie, who runs an animal shelter in Afganistan, specialising in helping military personnel get their animals home.

The relationship development between them was really well done, being on opposite sides of the world they initially can only communicate over email and skype, which was a little unusual and allowed you to see the emotional attachment growing between them even before they had ever met in person. Jeannie was a really sweet and caring person, passionate about her work and protective of the people she cares about. Zach – well, what can I say?

Gorgeous army hero with a love for animals – yes please. I liked that the author didn’t make him too perfect though, his insecurities about himself after his accident, as well as issues from a past relationship give him a vulnerability, and it was nice to see him starting to get some self-esteem back by the end, with Jeannie’s help.

This was a well-paced story, great characters, including some good supporting players, a sweet and well-developed love story, some steamy sex and a strong belief in Christmas miracles. Really enjoyed it and will definitely be looking for more from this author.

HolidaysInHell_ByErzabetBishop-453x680Holidays in Hell – Erzabet Bishop – 4 stars

Jonas is an incubus, trapped into a deal with a demon, he has to deliver a certain number of souls within a timeframe or he’s dead. There’s just one soul to go, but time is running short. When he meets Holly, a erotica reading book-seller who is still mourning her husband and dom, they have an instant connection. Will Jonas be willing to sacrifice her though?

This was a fun read, short and steamy. Jonas was an interesting character, the big bad demon with a secret love for all things Christmassy. Holly was sweet and endearing, trying to come to terms with the loss of her beloved husband, while struggling with the guilt of being able to move on. The sex scenes were steamy and well-written, and though I would personally have liked a little more on the relationship development side, I appreciate you don’t always get that in a short story.

I thought some of the secondary characters were interesting, and would be intrigued to see more of them in further books. They did all suddenly seem to appear out of nowhere at the end though, and the ending for me did feel a little rushed, I would have liked it to be more of a confrontation between Jonas and Bael. Personal preference though I suppose.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read, hot demons, some steamy sex, and a good dose of Christmas spirit.

index3Ribbon of Darkness: The Trouble with Elves, Book 1 – Decadent Kane – 4 stars

Ribbon lived a perfectly normal life, working in her parents bookstore. But now, weird things are happening to her ears, the hot and mysterious Draven keeps showing up, and before she knows it Ribbon is finding out that not only is she not what she seems, but that her and her family may be the only ones who can save Christmas.

I’m a big fan of Decadent Kane’s elves and this delivers a fun and sexy short read with a nice dose of Christmas spirit. Ribbon is an endearing and relatable character while Draven takes Santa’s elves in a whole different direction 😉 Enjoyable read, and will definitely warm you up on cold winter nights!

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

Happy St Andrews Day!

happystandrewsFor those of you on the last day of Nano, good luck and happy writing. And for those who may have started Nano and are not going to make the ‘goal’ I’ll echo what I’ve been saying to a few friends on facebook today – if you’ve written this month, and especially if you’ve written more than you normally would have, then I’d consider it a win 🙂 I knew there was no way I was going to make 50k this month, but I have some new words down and I’ve got through a lot of writing-related tasks (some I must admit that have been hanging around for a while) so I’m quite happy with my productive November.

promo graphicFor a wee roundup – I organised and released a charity anthology, Duty Honor Desire, with all proceeds to Help for Heroes.

Prequel Cover 3I finally finished, edited, formatted and made a cover for my prequel, Love Awakened – that you can find free here:

I’ve also been busy with new writing, re-editing on a Christmas story, and of course, promo for Love Reawakened – which is on the last day of its Thanksgiving weekend sale price! You can find it here:

So, I’m feeling like it was a good month 🙂 We’re into December tomorrow so I guess it’s going to be a busy one, Christmassy things already seem to be stacking up so hopefully there will be time to fit in all the writing things as well!

Take care x

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

These weekends do seem to fly by, don’t they? It’s been a bit of a busy week, had some survey work one day last week, which meant I ended up doing freelance work 5 days instead of 4. Hopefully it’ll bring a few extra pennies in before Christmas, but it does make it seem like a longer week and sadly cuts into the writing time! I have managed to get back to some new writing this week though – I’m doing an angel-themed story at the moment. It’s going to be very loosly tied to an angel story I wrote a couple of years ago, so fingers crossed it will be finished in time to release before Christmas.

indexI’m also doing the last checks on my free read prequel, so hopefully that’s going to be able to go up for download very soon. I know it’s going to be a free read, but it will be the first thing I’ll have released that won’t have gone through a professional editing process, so I’m a little paranoid that it shouldn’t have too many mistakes in it. It’s always so much easier to spot things in other people’s work than in your own 🙂

Our charity anthology also seems to be going quite well – and if you haven’t checked it out yet then please do have a look. All proceeds are going to charity, so you get three steamy reads and the chance to support a great cause!

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

Apologies for the lack of posting over the weekend. My laptop still isn’t fixed and now my network cable for my desktop computer in on the blink so have had very little internet over the past few days. Yup, technology hates me and nope, I’m not coping well 😉 Still, at least I had a friend visiting so managed to have a nice catchup and not sit around moaning.

Well, up until all my computery things had a wobble it was quite a productive week. As you probably saw, I’ve released a new anthology last week (if not, please do check it out, all proceeds to charity), and have managed to do a repolish on a Christmas story that I’m wanting to re-release soon. I’m also writing a shiny new one to go with it (though admittedly that’s now going a little slower without the laptop lol). They’re both angel-themed, which is a bit of a change of pace for me from necromancers, witches and shifters, but I’m enjoying it.

I’m also hoping to have the free read prequel for Love Reawakened up very soon, just waiting on it coming back from a final checkover and then I have the cover and everything all ready to go. I know, I know, it’s taken ages – fingers crossed it’ll be worth it!

Anyway, if the posting this week is a little hit and miss, I apologise, and hopefully normal services will resume soon 🙂

Have a good Monday x

Release Day – Duty, Honor, Desire – Military Charity Anthology

Hi all,

As you are probably aware the date today is 11/11 which means that, depending on where you are in the world, it’s Remembrance Day, Veterans Day, Armistice Day. Whatever you prefer to call it, it’s a day for remembering and honoring all those men and women who have served their country, some paying the ultimate price for it.

I previously had a military romance out with my old publisher and when I was looking at re-releasing it I really wanted to try and do something special. Along with fabulous fellow authors Leona Bushman and Sheri Velarde, then today we are releasing a military-romance themed anthology, called Duty, Honor, Desire – and best of all, all the proceeds are going to go to Help for Heroes. This is a wonderful military charity who helps both current and ex service people and their families, with a particular emphasis on those who have been wounded in the line of duty. Please, please show your support by buying a copy and sharing the links. Not only do you get three great military-themed stories, but you’re supporting an amazing cause! Thanks so much! x

Duty Honor Cover 1Blurb

They say all’s fair in love and war – but what happens when duty and honor clash with desire? Find out in these short and steamy romances, involving servicemen and women.

All proceeds to Help for Heroes.

Over A Dead Body – Leona Bushman

Chief Petty Officer John Riker has a problem—a dead body and no one for NCIS to blame but him. With blood covering his hands and uniform, he looks as guilty as he feels for being late and being unable to save his friend. And, if things aren’t bad enough, the NCIS in charge is his ex-fiance. While he hadn’t left her standing at the altar, he had broken it off hoping to save her the heartache of living alone while he served.
NCIS Special Agent Edith Jane Lancaster hates that Riker ends up being top suspect in a murder crime. Although, it does give her an advantage as she already knows his tells and his lies. Leaving her at the altar had been something he claimed to do for her so she wouldn’t be lonely, but that was all she’d been since he left—alone. Would her opinion cloud the subject? After five years, she figures she can be impartial.
Together, they have to find out who wanted to kill John’s friend in an elite Military move. Can Edith save John from the killer and himself? Can John ever forgive himself for leaving her? Will she? Or will they both die alone, with a killer running loose on the naval base?

A Chance at Love – Shelli Rosewarne

Corporal Aidan Hamilton has the unenviable job of telling his best friend’s sister that her brother isn’t coming back. This is slightly complicated by the fact that from the moment he meets Suzanne Kelsey he knows she’s everything he’s ever wanted. While Suzanne might need someone to lean on at the moment, can he convince her that what they have is more than a short term fling?
Suzanne had always told her big brother that being a soldier was too dangerous, so when she sees the uniformed officer in front of her house she knows exactly what he’s here to tell her. While Aidan may set her blood on fire, Suzanne has already lost one soldier she loved and she’s not prepared to trust her heart to another one.

Taking Pleasure Where You Can – Sheri Velarde

Ever since Pearl Harbor John had become a shell of a man, not able to move on from the trauma. One night out with the guys and one woman were about to change everything.

Monday Catch Up

Hi all,

Well, Monday rolls round again and I hope you’ve all had a fun weekend. Mine did mostly consist of working, though managed a wee break on Saturday to catch up with a friend over food. This friend is currently on a creative writing course at university, and it made me very sad to hear that some of her fellow students are being very critical and unsupportive in terms of the required feedback needed for the course. I’ve been very lucky in the fact that most other writers I’ve met have been very helpful and supportive and there are some wonderful author communities out there. Sadly, I do know other people who haven’t been so lucky and it always confuses me a little why some writers seem to feel the need to tear each other down. Perhaps it’s insecurity, or some strange notion that they’re getting rid of the competition, but at the end of the day I don’t see how it takes anything away from you to build up your fellow writers.

Duty Honor Cover 1Anyway, speaking of supporting other writers, I’ve been concentrating this week on getting my anthology, with fab fellow authors Leona Bushman and Sheri Velarde, all finished off and ready to go live. I’m really excited to be involved in this — and all proceeds are going to charity.

I’ve also been working on some Christmas stories, and it must be getting me in an xmassy mood as I’ve actually bought my first pressies! Trust me, this is very unlike me, I’m usually the one running round in December 🙂 So, better get back to it.

Have a wonderful week x

My Sexy Saturday & Cover Reveal

Hi all,

Well, it’s been a busy week! While I’m not officially joining in Nano I have made a list of writing tasks I want to get completed this month, and the writing motivation going round at the moment seems to be definitely helping! Today, I’m joining in the My Sexy Saturday blog hop again, and I also said I’d have some news for you – so here we go 🙂

I’ve been looking at re-releasing a short read that was previously involved in an anthology with my old publisher. It’s called A Chance at Love, and is a military-based romance. I’m very excited to announce that I’m joining forces with the awesomely talented Leona Bushman and Sheri Velarde, and we’re going to release a mini-anthology on a military theme, with all proceeds going to Help the Heroes. If you haven’t heard of them, they’re an amazing charity who help current and ex service-people, with a special emphasis on those who have suffered injuries in the line of duty. It’s called Duty, Honor, Desire and we’re hoping to release this week, in line with Remembrance Day/Armistice Day, so it would be wonderful if you could all support us.

So, my excerpt this week comes from Suzanne and Aidan in A Chance at Love, and this is the first glimpse of our shiny new cover. Really hope you like both!

Duty Honor Cover 1She’d been half-expecting it to be a dream, but the day before started crashing back into reality. Christ, not only had she got the worse news of her life but she’d apparently dealt with it by jumping into bed with a complete stranger. Maybe if she just didn’t have to look at him, she covered her face with her hands.

He stopped stroking her – she was happy about that and not at all disappointed – and cupped her face.

“Hey, you okay?”

She groaned, did he have to be so nice about things? Especially when she was pretty much dying of embarrassment here. She forced herself to sit up, realized too late that this bared her breasts, and grasped for the covers with a squeak. He was eying her with amusement. Okay, so he’d seen a whole lot more then that last night – but that had been last night and this was, well, not last night!

“Look, Aidan, I may have acted a little, er, inappropriately last night.”

The lazy smile he shot her did odd flippy things to her insides.

“I think you were pretty damn amazing last night.”

Have a wonderful weekend – and don’t forget to check out the rest of the great excerpts at

Tuesday Teaser – 03/11/15

Hi all,

Happy Tuesday! Well, it’s into November, the nights are drawing in and let’s face it, winter is def creeping up on us *sighs* Still, it’s a sunny Autumn day today so I though I’d share a wee teaser with you. I’ve been re-editing my military-themed short ‘A Chance at Love’ (and it’s not finished yet, so please excuse any mistakes) and I should have some news for you later this week on it 😉 In the meantime though, I’ll leave you with this snippet from Suzanne and Aidan. Hope you enjoy!

Suzanne sat up in bed screaming, her thin t-shirt plastered to her back with sweat and her heart pounding. For a moment she thought, thank God, just a dream, and then she remembered the day before. She tried to draw in a deep breath but her chest felt tight. She had the uncomfortable feeling she was verging on her first ever panic attack when there was a knock on her bedroom door. She gave a small shriek before remembering she’d asked Aidan to stay the night. Stupid! Do you think burglars usually knock?

“You okay?” The voice outside the door was low and sleep-filled. She felt a stab of guilt that she’d woken him.

“I’m fine,” she called back.

“Can I come in?”

She paused. It probably wasn’t a good idea, but she didn’t think she could cope with being on her own with her thoughts right now.

“Okay,” she called back.

He lightly pushed the door open and stood in the doorway dressed in just his boxers. Well, that was one kind of distraction, she thought, taking in the broad chest, defined abs, and muscular legs sprinkled with blond hair. He flushed under her gaze.

“Sorry, I should have got dressed. I was worried, I heard a scream.”

“I had a bad dream. I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“It’s fine.” He walked over to sit on the end of the bed. “You’ve been crying.”

She was about to shake her head when she realized her cheeks were wet. He took a corner of the cover and gently wiped her eyes with it.

“Thanks,” she managed to get out.

He’d moved closer and she could feel the heat of his leg pressing against her side through the thin covers.

“I should probably go,” he muttered.

She felt a stab of panic – she didn’t want to be alone. In fact, she thought suddenly, eyeing up the tanned chest that was so close to her now, what she needed was a distraction. A really good distraction. A six foot, half naked, almost in her bed already, distraction. She reached out her hand and lightly stroked it over his chest, feeling him tense, the muscles clenching under her touch. She met his gaze, seeing desire warring with restraint. Well, one would have to go, she thought with a half smile.

When Sparks Fly – Blog Hop and Giveaway

Hi all,

Fireworks over the St. Louis Arch.

This weekend I’m joining in the Blog Hop Spot ‘Sparks will Fly’ blog hop. Lots of great authors, bloggers and etc are involved, many offering great giveaways. If you want to see more check out the full list here

It’s a great theme ‘When Sparks Fly’ – and I think such an integral part of the story for any romance writer. Even if you write sweet romance where it may be strictly to ‘behind closed doors’ then the sparks between two people (or more if you’re so inclined!) are what draw you into the romance, make you feel for the characters, relate to their emotions.

For me it’s often the ‘sparks’ that actually spark the story for me. If you start with an attraction between the characters then you can spiral into a whole story just from that point – how did that first spark happened, are they happy about it, do they want to act on it at first, do they seem compatible in other ways, what is standing between them – and often the most important one – can that first spark build into something more. It’s an exciting journey to go on with your characters or great fun to travel along with someone else’s.

Speaking of sparks,  I promised a giveaway and since I missed posting for the 4th of July or American Independence Day yesterday I’d like to share an excerpt from my submision in the Breathless Press ‘Serviced’ Anthology – since it has a military theme, featuring the servicemen and women who help keep our countries independent and free. But of course you can’t work all the time 🙂

“I should probably go,” he muttered.

She felt a stab of panic, she didn’t want to be alone. In fact, she thought suddenly, eyeing up the tanned chest that was so close to her now, what she needed was a distraction. A really good distraction. In fact, a 6ft,half naked, almost in her bed already, distraction. She reached out her hand and lightly stroked it over his chest, feeling him tense, the muscles clenching under her touch. She met his gaze, seeing desire warring with restraint. Well, one would have to go, she thought, with a half smile.

She leaned forward, bracing her hand on his chest, to lightly brush her lips across his. His lips were soft, warm, she felt him tense as though to pull back and she ran her other hand into the close cropped hair at the back of his head, clutching him to her, her body now pressed against his. She ran her tongue along the seam of his lips, and he groaned.

She felt the exact moment he gave in, when his body relaxed against her, his hand slid round to her back, crushing her closer against him, and his tongue plunged into her mouth. She moaned as their tongues duelled, heat spreading through her body. Christ, he sure as hell could kiss.
